Update II: Finishing the Work

Posted on:

Westside Community,

We hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas with your families.

In recent days, we have been asking for your support with helping us complete our “exterior campus” and build a soccer field. We have talked about the great benefit this would be to our community, as well as some good tax reasons to make a gift prior to year-end.

But I wanted to take a brief moment and remind us all about the “bigger picture”.

A recent Barna Research Group survey revealed only 9% of the American population holds to a biblical worldview. Even more alarming: only one half of one percent of the Mosaic generation (those 18-23 years old) has a biblical worldview.

Westside Christian exists to be a light on a hill for God’s work in the world. We exist to provide training for future generations so that they are able to learn to think and live biblically within their chosen spheres of influence.

Westside’s goal is to be excellent in every area in which we engage student growth and development. We aspire to be an extraordinary high school in the greater Portland area with the heart and mind of Christ.

As the year-end quickly approaches, we are now over half way toward our goal of $1.2 million! We praise the Lord for His provision, and thank all of you who have given and/or pledged to make our soccer field and facility improvements a reality!

If you are considering alternatives for year-end gifting, we would be honored if you considered Westside.

You are a generous community! We are so thankful for your support for Westside, and for some of you, that faithfulness has been for many, many years!

Let us say again how grateful we are for our Westside family. Together, we are “Finishing the Work.”

Dear Westside Community,

We hope that all your preparations for Christmas and the holidays are nearly done, and that you will enjoy a rich time with family and friends celebrating our Savior’s birth.

As the year-end quickly approaches, we wanted to follow up on our end-of-year giving request with a quick update. We are now over half way toward our goal of $1.2 million! We praise the Lord for His provision, and thank all of you who have given and/or pledged to make our soccer field and facility improvements a reality!

Also, for those of you who are able to take advantage of the tax benefits of charitable giving, we wanted to make you aware of some possible tax changes that may make giving in 2016 a better stewardship value than waiting. Here is a link that provides some information about these anticipated changes:  http://www.cbsnews.com/news/charitable-givers-trumps-tax-plan-means-move-fast/

In brief, possible future caps on itemized deductions as well as reduced marginal tax rates may lower the tax benefit of giving in future years. Of course, you should seek advice from your tax counsel to see how this affects your own situation, but if you are considering increasing your year-end giving, we would be honored if you considered Westside’s soccer field project!

Dear Friends,

You recently received a letter asking you to consider a year-end gift to help with the turf field we are going to build on site at the school, hopefully by next fall.  If you haven’t made a decision about whether to contribute before year’s end, please give the field another thought.  I can’t tell you how many of the students see me and earnestly ask: “Do you think we’ll have a field in time for next season?!” You may recall that we were given a $50,000 match grant. We have raised over $33,000 toward that match, so we have made some good progress but have some room to go.

Whether or not you can give, thank you for being part of the fantastic community at Westside Christian High School.

*** If you have some stock that has appreciated in value; rather than sell and take the tax hit, you might want to gift the stock to the school for this project. If so, please contact Cassandra Jenks at the school (jenks@wchsonline.org or 503.697.4711)
