Apples with bit of sweet honey.

Last week Mr. Westerberg and some of our brand new international students used a Hebrew Rosh Hashana tradition of apples dipped in honey to express a blessing on each other to have a sweet new year. We have 34 international students from 8 different countries as part of our student body.

Here’s wishing them all a sweet new year in their new home!

At the beach!

Girls soccer opened their 2017 season Monday at Taft High School with a convincing 7 nil win.

Freshman Morgan Petersen opened the scoring in the third minute and the Eagles kept it going from there with Kaia Lunz, Lauren Demaris and Laura Staropoli all finding the net.  GK Lexi Rodriguez, along with defenders Mary Nordlund, Megan Larson, Peyton Jones, Hollyn Dugan, Olivia Mills and Kate Groscup preserved the clean sheet. Kelsey Moore, Aly Larson, Kayley Cross, Bella McMahon, Brooklyn Rodriguez, and Natalie Van Gordon all played quality minutes and contributed to the win.

Immediately after the match the team headed to Cape Lookout State Park for two nights of tent camping, great food (courtesy of experienced camper Rob Groscup), campfires and hours on the beach.  The girls even enjoyed a short ride into town to visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory for free cheese samples and fresh Tillamook ice cream.

A return to Portland and some focused trainings are next on the agenda as the season schedule will have its share of significant challenges.

Jason Normansen

Jason Normansen

Mr. Normansen will be teaching French (1 & 2) and Spanish (1 & 2).

My name is Jason Normansen, and I’m from Eugene, OR but have lived in Portland for the last 7 years. I am married to my wonderful wife, Kristin, and we love being the parents of a new baby boy named Leif, who was born in June.

For hobbies, I enjoy reading, cooking, and playing guitar and piano. I also really enjoy languages, and can often be overheard asking someone how to say something in their native langue. As a family, we also like going to the river and the beach as often as we can. One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 Peter 4:8: “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins.”

Mrs. Galloway will be teaching Physical Science, Conceptual Physics, and Chemistry.

I’ve been married to Scott for 35 years. We have two sons, and our oldest son lives not too far away and is married with a three year-old and another on the way!  Our youngest son is in Washington and just got engaged!  Blessings poured out, pressed down and overflowing!

My husband enjoys fishing and hunting, I enjoy teaching 🙂 and we both enjoy traveling.  I have a few verses that I like to remember:

  • James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
  • Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three gather in My name, there am I with them.”
  • 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in your weakness.”
  • Ephesians 3:20 “All glory to God who is able to do far more than all we can ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us.”

Rob & his '65 Chevy

Rob & his ’65 Chevy

Rob Casteel joins Westside after most recently being Westview High School’s Athletic Director. Welcome aboard Rob!

I have been married 33 years to Lori Casteel. We met as first year teachers at Cedar Park Junior High, and for the past 13 years we worked together at Westview High School. We have three children, Amanda (28) who is married to Randy Sinner and lives and teaches in LA. Robert (26), who works for Amazon in Seattle. Our youngest, Eli (24) is working on his masters at Taylor University but more importantly is engaged to Kirin Foster and will be married next July.

I have recently retired from public education after 34 years. Two gifts I have enjoyed this summer are a tour of Slovenia, Croatia,  Bosnia and driving a new to me but old ’65 Chevy pickup.

Rob & Lori

Rob & Lori

In my coaching career, I have always been involved with high school football in some capacity, but this fall, for the first time in 33 years, I have booked a weekend trip for Lori and I at the Oregon Coast. I am truly looking forward to my new experience at Westside Christian as a teacher and athletic director.

Favorite scripture John 11: 44 – Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him loose.” I have always taken this as a reminder that only Jesus gives life but He lets us participate in setting other people free in their new life!

Hannah will be joining the WCHS team and teaching Intro to Art, Advanced Art, AP Studio Art, Digital Design, and Yearbook.

I have been teaching high school for 7 years, and love it! I have my BA in Bible and Theology from Biola, my teaching license for Art from UCLA, and am currently working on my MA in Bible and Theology at Western Seminary in Portland. I love teaching at a Christian school because it allows the unique freedom to teach and create art with joy, purpose and meaning as artists ourselves created in God’s image.
