State Champion: Rachael Hahn

Rachael Hahn is OSAA’s 2017 4A/3A/2A/1A singles State Tennis Champion! The tournament was held at Oregon State University on May 19th and 20th. Hahn was the number one seed heading into the State Tournament after finishing 1st in her District Tournament. 

In Round 1 Hahn played Meghan Beishe from Sherman and with minimal errors and superb play quickly defeated her 6-0, 6-0. Hahn then went on to defeat Erica Mitchell from Cascade 6-1, 6-0. Next she faced the tournament’s overall number 3 seed, freshmen Courtlyn Lam, from Klamath Union in the semifinals. Rachael eventually won a long and fought 3 set match 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Rachael squared off against Kate Keeney from OES in the finals and defeated her 7-5, 6-0.

It was an amazing year of tennis for Rachael, finishing 18-1 on the way to securing a State Championship Title. The win earned Westside Christian a Third Place team finish in State for Girls’ 4A/3A/2A/1A.

Rachael Hahn District Champ!

Rachael Hahn dominated the singles draw of the District Tournament this week, beating the entire field to be crowned Special District 1 District Champion. After a 1st round bye, earned by being the tournament’s overall # 2 seed, she convincingly beat Haley Ou from Tillamook 6-0,6-0. Then in round number three she took down an athlete from OES 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals setup a match with # 3 seeded Mia Friedman from OES, where Rachael prevailed in straight sets over her long time friend and club playing partner.

In the District finals Rachael again played an OES foe, squaring off against the # 1 seed in the tournament Kate Keeney. Here Hahn again dispatched her in only two frames, winning 6-3, 6-3. Rachael won all three of her matches in straight sets, on her way to capturing her first ever District Tournament Championship. She will now await seeding for the State Tournament, where her eye will be on an even bigger crown.

The Girls’ Tennis Team continues to be a strong force this season with a tie of 4-4 against strong rival Catlin Gabel and definitive 8-0 wins against Tillamook and Riverdale. Rachael Hahn beat Catlin Gabel’s Aarushi Phalke at #1 Singles 6-0, 6-0. Mary Nordlund defeated Senior Kobi Saha at #2 Singles 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Younse Park defeated Regan Magee at #4 Singles 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. McKenzie Turner and Soteria Pecore defeated Juniors Culla Galaher and Kathyrn Putz 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. The team then went to Tillamook winning 8-0 with Rachael Hahn leading off the singles defeating Kathryn Woolfolk 6-0, 6-0. Younse Park at #2 Singles defeated Janel Cruz 7-5, 6-4. Gabrielle Lau at #3 Singles defeated Haley Ou 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Gracie Roach defeated Naledi Monamets 6-1, 6-1. Allison Marti and Mary Nordlund lead off the doubles defeating Coral Morales and Chloe Weber at #1 doubles 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Mia Cywinski and Brittney Martin defeated Anna Mattson and Dorian Romero at the number 2 spot. The #3 Doubles team of Jessica Beighle and McKenzie Turner defeated Alexis Stevens and Claire Atchison 6-1, 6-2. Elisabeth Gouge and Soteria Pecore had a great win at #4 Doubles defeating Lily Lux and Nong Jetterat 6-0, 7-5. Audrey Eucker and Taylor Foglio also played a great match defeating their JV opponents 8-2. The team followed their great wins with a memorable overnight in Tillamook and a day of celebration on the beach in Pacific City. Jumping

The team continued their winning streak against Riverdale on April 21st. Mary Nordlund led off the the singles showing great determination defeating Julia Brown 6-1,6-1. Allison Marti at #2 singles showed great perseverance defeating Emma Brendle 6-3,3-6, 6-3. Younse Park quickly defeated Tohar Or-Amitay 6-0, 6-0. Kayla Nguyen at #4 Singles had a great win defeating Malani Ortiz 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The doubles was led by Mia Cywinski & Brittney Martin at #1 showing great determination and teamwork defeating Isabelle Whitlock & Allison Molinari 5-7, 6-2 10-7 (3rd set tie-breaker). Gabrielle Lau & Kelsey Moore showed great poise defeating Grace Inglin & Olivia Corveloi 6-2, 6-1. Gracie Roach & McKenzie Turner played a great match defeating Mia Ward & Sara Scarlett 6-1, 6-1. And Sarah Oh & Elisabeth Gouge won by default.

The team will be busy over the next two weeks as they wrap up district play before the District Tournament. Come watch them take on Blanchet Catholic Thursday, April 27th and Valley Catholic April 28th, both at Fowler Middle School with a start time of 4:15pm. In their final week the JV will host Lake Oswego High School’s JV2 team on Monday May 1st. The Varsity will host Catlin Gabel on Tuesday, May 2nd and Tillamook on May 5th. Come show your support to this great group of ladies! The District Tournament will be held at Tualatin Parks and Recreation on Monday and Tuesday, May 8th & 9th.

Rachael Hahn won her first two State Championship matches, propelling her into the semifinals, before falling to the eventual state champion Lara Rakocevic. Rachael finished her strong junior campaign with an overall 4th place finish in the Singles State Championships.

Strong Tennis Outing vs. OES

The girls tennis team had a great match last Tuesday against OES. Rachel Hahn had an outstanding win against state contender Kate Keeney, beating her in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. The #2 Doubles team of Annalise Lau and Brittney Martin also had an outstanding win, beating the tough team of Jennifer Lee & Kyla Kelsay, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The team continues to improve as they head into the second half of their season. They have a busy schedule next week with three matches, leading off with Riverdale at Lewis & Clark College 7pm Tuesday night. Thursday and Friday are home matches against Tillamook and Catlin Gable at 4:30pm at Fowler Middle School. Come cheer on this awesome group of ladies! Go Eagles!

Tennis Wins Big Again

The Westside girls tennis team puts up another big win, this time beating Riverdale 7-1. Rachel Hahn lost a tough match against state contender Michelle Ly, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Mary Nordlund beat senior Hannah Rosenbam 6-0, 6-4 at 2nd singles. Junior Younse Park beat Tohar Or-Amitay at 3rd singles 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out the singles matches was junior Jessica Beighle beating senior Rachel Berne 6-1, 6-1 at 4th singles. The Westside doubles teams swept Riverdale in straight sets, only allowing the Maverick’s 7 games in 3 matches. At #1 doubles, senior Lili Tao and junior Allison Marti beat junior’s Allison Molinar and Isabelle Whitlock 6-4, 6-2. The # 2 doubles team of junior Annalise Lau and sophomore Britney Martin beat senior Beatrice Solomon and freshman Emma Brende 6-0, 6-0. Junior Mia Cywinski and sophomore Gabrielle Lau beat freshman Alina Tzintzin and Sara Scarlett 6-0, 6-1 at #3 doubles. The Eagles are 3-1 so far this season.

The Girls’ Tennis team is off to a great start with an 7-1 win over Valley Catholic. Rachel Hahn, Mary Nordlund, and Younse Park all won their singles matches in straight sets. The doubles pairs of Lili Tao & Allison Marti, Annalise Lau & Britney Martin, Gabrielle Lau & Laura Madison, and Jessica Beighle & Sarah Oh also swept their doubles’ matches in straight sets.
