Westside Girls Capture District Title and Improve Showing at State Back to Blog »
Lake Oswego, Ore. — May28, 2013 — On May 17-18, the Westside Christian Eagles girls’ track & field team arrived at the West Valley League 3A District Meet mentally prepared for a strong showing. They did not disappoint as the team earned 200 points, 85 points more than 2nd place team, and walked away with the District Championship.
The following Westside athletes earned district championship honors in their respective events: Ryan Conlin 100m and 200m; Lisa Jauch 400m; Sarah Curtis 800m and 3000m; Kayla Brase 300m hurdles and triple jump; Micaiah Fischer, Kayla Brase, Jessie Mathison, Ryan Conlin 4 X 100m; and Lisa Jauch, Sarah Curtis, Kayla Brase, Ryan Conlin 4 X 400m. Joining these ladies at the State meet by placing 2nd in her event was Erin Rowland in both the long jump and triple jump.
The lady Eagles traveled to the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene to compete in the State Meet on May 23 – 24 with the goal of improving upon their 5th place team finish last year. And improve they did. They scored 52 team points to earn 3rd place in State out of 33 scoring teams in the 3A division.
The lady Eagles were led by junior Kayla Brase who earned a State Championship in the triple jump, 4th in the 300m, and ran key legs on the 2nd place 4 X 100m and 4th place 4 X 400m relay teams. Joining Brase in the 4 x 100m were Micaiah Fischer, Jessie Mathison, and Ryan Conlin. 4 x 400m relay members also included Ryan Conlin, Lisa Jauch, and Sarah Curtis. Other Westside ladies to score included Conlin who took 3rd in the 200 and 4th in the 100, Curtis was 3rd in the 800 and 7th in the 3000, and Erin Rowland was 6th in the triple jump and 7th in the long jump.
During the 2013 season, three new Westside records were set. Brase broke the triple jump record by a foot at 37’3.75″. With this achievement, Brase established herself in the top five in the state in all classifications. Additionally, the 4 X 100m relay team and Clair Stites (discus) broke Westside records.
Seven of the athletes earned All-State honors: Brase: first team – triple jump, second team – 4 X 100m relay, honorable mention – 300m hurdles, 4 X 400m relay; Conlin: second team – 4 X 100m relay, third team – 200m, honorable mention – 100m, 4 X 400m relay; Fischer: second team – 4 X 100m; Mathison: second team – 4 X 100m; Curtis: third team – 800m, honorable mention – 3000m, 4 X 400m relay; Jauch: honorable mention – 4 X 400m relay; Rowland: honorable mention – long jump, triple jump.
“Our ladies had a strong year,” said Moreland Anderson, Westside track co-coach. “This is the second best point total we’ve ever earned at State. Since many of our lady athletes are juniors, they are looking forward to another solid season next year.”
