Van Anderson is one of six children, and was born and raised in Compton, California. He attended elementary and high school at St. Anthony’s in Long Beach, California. He was a three-sport athlete and lettered in football, basketball and track and field. After high school, he was awarded a scholarship to attend Oregon State University, where he played for Legendary Coach Ralph Miller. Van transferred and finished his career at California State Fullerton University, where he studied Public Relations-Communications. Van resides here in the Portland Metro area with his beautiful wife Angela and family.
Van played professional basketball for Tri-Cities in Saginaw, Michigan. Eventually, he sought to give back locally to his community and decided to become a coach and mentor to student-athletes ages 10-18. Van states that he has been blessed to assist and help mold the minds of our youth and assist them in achieving their dreams and continuing their education. Van credits his uncle John for providing an outlet in allowing him to play for one of the best and most influential AAU programs in California. His uncle John’s girl’s program, O.G.D.L. (Olympic Girls Development League), has been one of the most successful women’s programs in the country, and it has fielded dozens of our former Olympic Gold medalists and Hall of Fame WNBA players.
Locally, Van has helped build and develop championship AAU programs on different levels for both girls and boys (Run It Back Sports and Portland Energy). He uses this platform to mentor and coach student-athletes to achieve their dreams, by staying focused and potentially playing at the next level after high school. Van has been fortunate enough to play, coach and train players in the NBA Summer League in California, but some of his fondest memories are from coaching at the high school level at Gretchen Whitney High in Cerritos, CA, Lincoln High School in Portland, and here at Westside Christian.

My favorite verse is found in Hebrews 11:1 “Faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see.” God has always been a big part of my life and when all three of my children made the decision to follow Christ during the pandemic in 2020, my life was complete. God is good!
Originally from Prineville, Oregon, Jason moved to Portland where he would find his wife of 17 years. Jason is inspired daily by his wife, Amanda, and their three children; 15 year-old Brady, 12 year-old Aaden, and 9 year-old daughter, Addie-Mae. His free time is spent with family, camping, working on the property, listening to music or up on the mountain snowboarding.
This is Jason’s 10th year in Christian education. Most recently, Jason served as Director of Development at Columbia Christian Schools for 4 years. Throughout the various seasons of my life, God has walked me through many wonderful doors to help the next generation of believers grow toward adulthood. This focus has been sharpened through decades of working with adolescents in both the secular and Christian spheres. In particular, the local church, the high school and college classrooms, and on the tennis court. My heart is to provide students with the tools to become intentional in their discipleship, confident in their academic discovery and to maintain a display of grace in competition.
Over the years, the questions I seemed to get asked the most relate to my work in math and theology. Today’s cultural mindset has a difficult time reconciling the two. However, historically, the two have intertwined beautifully. Both have been avenues, tools, to discover the truth. Unfortunately, our postmodern sensibilities have been eroding the foundations of both. Yet, I still believe our emerging generation thirsts for truth.
Academically, I have undergraduate degrees in math and physics, graduate degrees in theology and math education, and a doctorate in the study of the biblical perspective on adolescent development in a postmodern cultural context. I came to Westside to continue my journey of life-long learning as we engage with the emerging generation of believers, two of whom will be my own children in the near future. I want to be a part of a place where educating students to make an impact on the Kingdom of God is a priority. I want my children to emerge from their high school years purposed on God’s direction. That is why I am here at Westside.

I was born and raised in Romania and came to the U.S. when I was about to turn 12. I've wanted to be a teacher ever since I can remember and would come back from school and play pretend teacher with chalk that I would borrow from school. Even in Romania, whenever I pretended to be a teacher, I was always speaking a "language" that was not Romanian, as though I was destined to teach in a language that was not my native one. I wanted to be a teacher because I wanted to be different from the ones in Romania who "ruled with an iron fist."
When I moved here, I saw that it is possible to teach with love and passion, so my dream was solidified. I followed my dream and studied English Literature at PSU and then went on to George Fox University to get my Master's degree in Teaching. After that, I taught in different public schools, including Glencoe High School, Tigard High School, and finally Edward Little High School in Maine. When we were ready to move back to Oregon, I started looking for a job and wanted to distance myself a bit from the way public schools were doing things. I happened upon a job posting here at Westside and started working part time as the Sophomore English Teacher.
Working at Westside opened my eyes to what a better teacher I could be if I didn't have to hide the most important part of who I am, a Christian. When I left Westside at the end of my first year, I told myself I would only come back if someone at the school contacted me personally asking me to come back; it was a sign. I took it as an answered prayer when Head of School, John Hynes, emailed me asking if I'd be interested in interviewing for this position. Though I grew up in a Christian home and was baptized when I was 15, I have always been a bit "stubborn" when it came to my faith. It seems like God has always had to spell things out for me to be convinced, so it was the same thing with coming back to Westside. I love being here because this is where God has challenged me to be a better teacher and a better Christian.

Mrs. Rose has been married to her husband, Mark, for 36 years. They have two adult children, Emily and Michael, and a granddaughter, Harper, who is 4. She loves spending time with friends and family attending sporting events. The Roses are avid Oregon State Beaver fans. She enjoys traveling, but most of all, spending time with Harper. Mrs. Rose enjoys volunteering at various nonprofit organizations and attends Athey Creek Christian Fellowship.
