The OSAA Executive Board voted to extend Season 1 through February 21, 2021 to allow training, workouts, and even competitions to occur in those areas of the state that are allowed per the Governor’s Office, OHA guidance, and local school district policy.
Fall sports moved to Season 2, which begins on February 22nd and ends April 11th with multiple activities permitted by state guidance. This change allows time for case counts to decrease in the new year and for counties to subsequently move out of the Extreme Risk category. Cross Country and Soccer, as outdoor sports, are permitted by the Governor’s Office and OHA in all counties. As an indoor activity, Volleyball is tied to the Governor’s County Risk Level Guidance and only allowed in counties deemed as Lower, Moderate, or High Risk.
Season 3 will take place from April 5th to May 23rd and feature the traditional Spring activities, which include WCHS’ Baseball, Golf, Tennis, and Track & Field. All of these activities are permitted by state guidance as outdoor activities.
The sports calendar wraps up with Season 4 from May 10th to June 27th. This shifts WCHS Basketball to the end of the calendar and provides the most runway for their prohibition to be lifted by the state. The OSAA has given no indication that a change will be made in this designation but remains hopeful that a change could occur prior to Season 4.

Sports have looked very different this year. With Fall being a season with an opportunity for schools to create friendly competition, WCHS Cross Country Coach Ball took advantage of the opportunity for his team to run and compete against other Christian Schools in the area.
Westside's Fall Cross Country Season ended on October 30th at the COVID Christian School Championship meet held at Horizon Christian School.
On November 2nd, Coach Ball hosted an Awards Celebration for the student-athletes who participated. Three athletes were singled out for special recognition. As the only girl runner, junior Meg A. received the “Girls Team Award” since she was the entire girls’ team this fall. Freshman Miles C. was honored with a “Rookie of the Year” award as the fastest freshman. And junior David Dugan was recognized as the season’s “Most Outstanding Runner”. Congratulations to each athlete for their accomplishments this season.
And thank you, Mr. Ball for creating a safe opportunity for Westside Christian High School students to compete and work together in a team environment.

This past January, Westside Christian High School’s Athletic Department inducted its inaugural Hall of Fame Class. There was a Formal Banquet held on January 20th celebrating the four individuals and two teams of the inaugural class.
As we head into the 2020-2021 academic year, The Hall of Fame committee has remained active. The committee consists of WCHS Athletic Director, Rob Casteel; Head of School, John Hynes; Teacher, Scott Wright; Administrative Staff, Caroline Hottman and Cassandra Tyner; WCHS Boys’ Basketball Coach, David Henry; Former WCHS’ Girls’ Soccer Coach and former WCHS parent, Mike Staropoli.
Due to COVID-19, a date has not been set for the second banquet. We are currently contacting our second class to inform them of their induction. This class includes one of Westside Christian’s current teachers, coaches, and alumna - Kayla (Brase) Wicks. As we continue to contact inductees, we are working with families, getting memorabilia, videos, and conducting interviews. This process of working with the families is very rewarding, I hear stories of what God continues to do in the lives of these athletes. The Hall of Fame committee will continue to update you on our progress.
Rob Casteel, Athletic Director
